A QUICK RESPONSE TO ANY QUESTION IN CHINESE

As a result, if you’re walking through Beijing or Shanghai, you might come across someone who asks you a question in Chinese. When I initially went abroad to study, locals would approach me and ask me questions, and as a Chinese American, I would have no idea what to reply or even what they were asking.

As a result, the go-to phrase for everyone is:

不知道

Bu4 zhi1 dao4 – Pinyin (i.e. Latin script transcription of Chinese words):

Meaning: The truth is, I’m not sure.

I guarantee you, i’ts very convenient.

“dui4 bu qi3” (对不起) can also be added at the end.

Translation:I’m sorry.

To show that you’re not a complete jerk.
