Mumbai: Google is marking the global popularity of flat white coffee with an animated doodle today, on March 11,  showcasing its charm and widespread appeal. The animated Google Doodle celebrates the flat white, an espresso-based beverage believed to have originated in Australia and New Zealand. This doodle is visible across various countries, including India.

March 11 holds significance as it marks the day flat white was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2011. The flat white consists of steamed milk poured over a shot of espresso and is speculated to have first appeared on menus in Sydney and Auckland during the 1980s.

Traditionally served in a ceramic cup, a flat white is characterised by its thin layer of micro-foam, making it ‘flatter’ than a cappuccino or latte. It has gained popularity among coffee connoisseurs who prefer less foam in their beverages.

The preparation of flat white has evolved, with variations such as using plant-based milk like oat milk becoming more common. Despite its origins, the flat white has become a beloved choice for coffee lovers worldwide, appreciated as a favorite morning or afternoon pick-me-up.

Flat white recipe:

  • Brew your espresso shot, ensuring you measure the coffee accurately. If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can use a Moka Pot or AeroPress as alternatives.
  • Steam your milk until it reaches a silky texture, creating microfoam bubbles. While full-fat milk works best for creating foam, skimmed or semi-skimmed milk can also be used. Achieving the right consistency with the milk may require practice.
  • Remove any bubbles from the milk by gently tapping the milk jug on your countertop.
  • Pour the milk onto the espresso using a spoon to hold back the foam, ensuring only the hot milk is poured. This preserves the espresso crema, resulting in a delicious flat white.

Google Doodles are temporary modifications made to the Google logo to commemorate a wide range of local and global events, including holidays, important dates, and influential figures.
