DULUTH, MN. (Northern News Now) – Northern News Now reporter Taryn Simmons visited the Northern Life studio on Thursday, looking to share her family’s dessert recipes for Black History Month.

Southern Poundcake
3 Cups of Cake Flour3 cups of sugar

Two sticks of real butter unsalted
A teaspoon of baking powder
Lemon/Vanilla
1 Tablespoon
Five eggs
Half a cup of Crisco
Oven at 350 Degrees
Crisco, sugar, eggs, and butter – and beat it with a mixer.
Five eggs in, two sticks of butter, half a cup of Crisco, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 2 of each teaspoon vanilla, and lemon – beat until smooth then add flour and cup of milk.
Grease the pan with Crisco put flour over the grease and cover it all.
Let it cook.
Get a toothpick in it (if the dough comes out it’s not done).
Side note: Leave eggs and butter out to soften overnight.
Sweet Potato Pie
Sweet Potato Pie
2 large Sweet potatoes
Stick of butter
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 1/2 Cups Sugar
2 Egg
Tsp Vanilla favor
Nutmeg
Pie crust (not deep dish)
You add more sugar to taste.
Boil sweet potatoes until soft, then peel sweet potatoes.
Add sweet potatoes to a large bowl, 1/2 stick of butter, 2 eggs, vanilla flavoring, and baking powder, and mix.
Once mixed add to preheat oven of 350 and cook until crust is browned or light brown.
