Recipe books continue to remain popular but what if you just don’t have the time to consult one or don’t have access to one? Alexa came to the rescue of quite a few Indian users who used the virtual assistant technology to ask for recipes, even as basic as chai! But to be fair, it is the basics where people tend to go wrong most often.

‘Alexa, chai kaise banaate hain? (How to make tea?)’ was the topmost question for recipes asked by Indian users. The popularity of the beverage continues to rise in this tea-loving nation which is the second largest producer of tea in the world after China. There are many tea brands which have emerged as global players and tea cafes have sprung up all across the country. However, nothing beats a good cup of tea made at home. It is also one of those beverages which has multiple taste preferences depending on the ingredients used. Some prefer it black, while others use milk and whole spices such as ginger, clove, lemongrass or pepper. Therefore, the request for its recipe is pretty unsurprising.

The second most-sought after recipe is for, wait a minute, Maggi! The instant noodle brand which was introduced to the Indian audience in the 1980s has become a household name in the decades that followed. A comfort food which makes for a quick and easy travel snack, it can be made anywhere with just a pot of boiling hot water within two minutes. Its convenience, affordability and taste have made it one of the fastest-selling food items in India. Even though the recipe is specified on the packet, asking for a quick recap from Alexa seems easier.

Alexa continued to play sous-chef to Indian users who asked for recipes for other popular dishes and beverages such as the not-so-easy to make butter chicken, palak paneer, biryani, pizza, cold coffee, Potlee biryani, Kadhai chicken and chocolate. The choice of dishes shows how Indians are using technology to up their cooking skills.
