People on the occasion of Holi, prepare various cuisines and dishes to enjoy with friends and family and also as festival traditions. One such tradition each year is to prepare thandai. Thandai, a traditional Indian drink, is synonymous with the festival of colours, Holi. Made with a rich blend of nuts, seeds, and aromatic spices, Thandai not only cools the body but also adds a burst of flavour to festive celebrations.

Ingredients for Thandai

  1. Almonds – ¼ cup
  2. Cashew nuts – ¼ cup
  3. Pista – ¼ cup
  4. Fennel Seeds – 1½ tbsp
  5. Peppercorns – 12nos
  6. Watermelon seeds – 2tbsp
  7. Poppy Seeds – 2 tbsp
  8. Cardamom – 10nos
  9. Dried Rose Petals – 4tbsp
  10. Saffron strands – a generous pinch
  11. Nutmeg Powder – ½ tsp
  12. Cinnamon Powder – ½ tsp

Preparation for Thandai

  1. The most important step to preparing Thandai is soaking almonds, cashew nuts, pistachios, fennel seeds, peppercorns, watermelon seeds, and poppy seeds in water for a few hours or overnight.
  2. Now take a large bowl and mix cold milk, and sugar to taste. Mix well both for a thick consistency.
  3. Now take the soaked nuts and seeds and put them in a blender along with saffron strands, cinnamon powder, nutmeg powder and rose petals.
  4. Blend well to form a coarse masala known as Thandai masala.
  5. Add the thandai masala as per requirement in the milk and mix well. Strain the thandai mixture to avoid coarse grains or if you like enjoy it as it is.
  6. Chill thandai in the refrigerator and add 2-3 cubes of ice before serving.
  7. Garnish with saffron and chopped nuts and enjoy a glass full of happiness this Holi.
