Heather Scurry grew up in the restaurant business.

In fact, Scurry said her grandparents owned 40 different restaurants in South Carolina and the surrounding area throughout their career.

It was perhaps their knowledge and willingness to experiment with recipes that created the three-generation legacy.

“First it was called Bailey’s and then when my mom took it over it was called Country Annies and then when my husband Neal and I took over last summer it was changed to Scurry’s,” Scurry said.

Tucked away on a corner lot at 201 Lucas Avenue, Scurry’s is located in the Watts Mill area.

“There’s so much history here. This building has been a jewelry store and a barber shop and from what I understand, there’s supposed to be new developments coming through nearby,” Scurry said.

Walking in the door, customers often get the feeling of walking into their mother’s or grandmother’s kitchen.

The smell of homecooked food wafting in the air and the friendly faces keep people coming back week after week.

“I think we have a ton of pizza places and some buffet’s but not a lot of home cooked meals around,” Scurry said. “We often have people joke about how this is just how their mama used to make it.”

Perhaps most popular, Scurry said, is the Meat with Sides options.

Customers can choose their choice of meat including fried or baked chicken, fried pork chops, country fried steak and more. Sides include broccoli casserole, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potato casserole and collards.

The cheeseburgers are also quite popular and range from a Bacon Ranch to a Flaming Hot Jalapeno Burger.

It’s all made with Heather and Neal (who also has over a decade in the restaurant business) in the kitchen, using the recipes from decades ago and comes with plenty of positive reviews.

“Hands down, this place serves the best hamburgers in town. Every bit bursts with flavor and freshness. The service is always friendly and attentive,” said Cheryl Hudson, a recent customer.

Most of all, the homey atmosphere and friendly staff has created a family.

“We have regular customers that we look for when they don’t show up at their typical day and time. We do large events for people and offer availability if you want to host a church group or party,” Scurry said. “We really enjoy the relationships we’ve formed over the years.”
