Autumn’s Delight: Crisp Apple-Cinnamon Fritters

July 27, 2023

Located in NJ, our charming town annually becomes a haven for tristate residents, drawing them into the magic of the apple-picking season, punctuated by crisp apple-cinnamon fritters and scenic pumpkin patches. While occasional traffic may test patience, the allure of our town, with the scent of fresh apple cider donuts, remains irresistible.

Fall evokes vivid memories of russet leaves and the unmistakable flavor of apple confections. For me, autumn remains incomplete without savoring these signature apple donuts – such is the intensity of my fondness. Yet, every delight has its counterpart, and for the intricate donut, it’s the simpler and equally divine apple fritter. Dusted with cinnamon sugar, these bite-sized wonders are a breeze to prepare, making them not only delectable but also party-perfect.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup apple cider
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, and more for frying
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 apples, peeled, cored, and finely diced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar for dusting
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon for dusting

Crafting the Perfect Fritter:

1. Begin by whisking together the dry components (flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and salt). In another bowl, stir the milk, cider, eggs, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Gently incorporate the wet mixture into the dry, and fold in the diced apples.

2. For frying, heat the oil to 350 degrees F. If you have a thermometer, it’s ideal for ensuring the perfect temperature. Otherwise, trial with a single fritter and adjust accordingly. Embrace the culinary adage: “the first one’s a tester” to perfect the subsequent ones.

3. Once the oil reaches the desired temperature, spoon the batter into the oil and fry until they achieve a golden hue. Their unique shapes add to their rustic charm. After frying, drain them on absorbent paper.

4. While still warm, roll these delightful fritters in a mix of cinnamon and sugar. Serve immediately for the ultimate taste sensation. Freshness truly unlocks their magic!
